Healthy grooming or hygiene is a practice that keeps individuals to stay healthy and helps them to live with the optimum performance of the physical, emotional, and social aspects of their life. The concept of hygiene or grooming is well related to health, as well as medicine, in which it serves as a preventive measure for the spreading or proliferation of bacteria that can cause illness, which is done by breaking the chain of infection transmission. Once the chain of infection is broken, the mode of transmission will stop. Often, hygiene is interchanged with cleanliness. Although there are many aspects that may relate to healthy grooming, personal hygiene and sanitation are the two main cores of grooming habits. Thus, people should be aware of proper hygienic procedures.

Personal hygiene or healthy grooming habits are health maintenance through personal care, which includes hair care, nail care, foot care, genital care, and dental care, which totally keeps the body clean and healthy. In addition, maintaining good health requires nutrition and diet, recreation, rest, and exercise. All these factors are part of personal hygiene, which can make individuals feel and look good, which can then affect their physical and emotional well being. As a result, people who are well groomed can have a healthy and active life, which makes them perform better in work or any daily activity. This will allow them to gain the respect and appreciation of other people, which can boost their personality and help them to be productive.

Properly cared hair creates a strong appeal, which boosts one’s personality. Good hair grooming includes washing it every day, applying shampoo at least once a week, and brushing every after wash. Brushing of teeth every after eating promotes healthy teeth and gums and also prevents bad breath. Nail trimming should be done routinely to remove dirt in the nails and to reduce bacterial growth. Perineal care should likewise be observed.

Good grooming habits also include proper sanitation by proper disposal of waste and cleanliness of the surroundings, which deter bacteria from proliferating at home. Hand hygiene or hand washing is also part of the grooming habits as it prevents the spread of infectious microorganisms. It is done typically by washing hands with water. Other sanitizing agents can also be used. Hand hygiene is important not only to protect individuals from acquiring infectious organisms but also to prevent infecting others. This is observed in restaurants or hotels in the preparation of food, as well as in medical practices where healthcare practitioners are required to perform hand washing before a procedure is performed on a patient.

In sum, healthy grooming is the performance of fundamental practices to sustain optimum and balance functioning as a measure to prevent the acquisition of illness. Attaining a well-groomed personality may require time, effort, and discipline, and everyone should be able to do this regardless of a person’s standard of living.
